A charming collection of 11 watercolour paintings by Lancashire artist Vallance J. Gregson. As you can see from the individual photographs there is a diverse group of paintings all by the same artist and were painted between 1935 and 1943. Not much is known about the artist but after some research at Blackburn library we have found the following information out. Vallance J. Gregson was a male artist but has previously been recorded as a female artist, we are now 100% sure he was born Vallance Jean Gregson 30th September 1911 and died in February 1992 in Ludlow, Shropshire. He joined the Royal artillery in 1938 which would explain the gap in the paintings dates. He and his brother are thought to have lived in Bacup and were working in the slipper factories during this time. He exhibited his work in the R & A, London, The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and also in Manchester and Bacup. The quality of the work varies from painting to painting and most have pencil inscription titles, such as "Stoodley", "A farm in Edgeworth" etc..etc.. This is a fascinating collection of work from this period.
