A fine quality & rare Gillows Of Lancaster secretaire press. The upper section having a dentil cornice above twin panelled doors with flame veneered oval panels banded in rosewood and opening to reveal four oak lined sliding trays. The lower section having a wonderful fitted secretaire interior with drawers, pigeon holes and a central compartment which slides out via a concealed button to reveal an arrangement of secret drawers, with the finest mahogany dovetails and fitting absolutely perfectly almost creating a vacuum, such is the quality of the craftsmanship. Also having a further four oak lined drawers again with flame mahogany fronts and typical Gillows oval handles. Raised on slender splayed bracket feet. Stamped by Gillows of Lancaster and known as the Maxwell secretaire press as featured on page 65 of the Gillows Of Lancaster and London Volume 2 book by Susan Stuart. English circa 1792
